UNESCO World Heritage Day - We celebrate: Herod's banquet
Description
On this year's World Heritage Days, St. John's Monastery is celebrating a special object from the World Heritage Site, the so-called "Herod's Banquet".
This is the most famous depiction of the Romanesque frescoes.
The dancing Salome depicted upside down is an iconic image that has attracted international attention. It tells the story of John the Baptist, who is beheaded as a result of Salome's exciting dance and thus becomes a martyr.
The mural painting is located in the lower register of the central apse and has not been visible to the public for several years due to restoration work.
Last year, the restoration work in the lower register of the central apse was completed - a good reason to celebrate this important milestone and make the Salome accessible to the public for a day.
On 9 June from 13:30 - 18:00, there will be an opportunity to get up close to the colorful frescoes on registered guided tours on the first floor of the scaffolding and learn interesting background information about the Salome and the work of the restorers.
There are thirteen UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Switzerland. Three of them are located in Graubünden. The Sardona Plain, the Rhaetian Railway and the St. Johann Monastery in Müstair. These cultural assets of national importance are the focus of the annual World Heritage Days, which offer an attractive program for locals and visitors alike.
