Description
Our tips for the Way of St. James:
- Dischma Valley: The Dischma is with approximately twelve kilometers the longest of the Davos side valleys and a charming excursion destination. The Dischma stream is fed by glacier melt, is icy cold and crystal clear.
- Walser village Sapün and mountain restaurant Heimeli: The wild and romantic Sapün valley with deep gorges, high bridges, a wild stream and dreamlike flower meadows with the Walser hamlet Dörfji Sapün. After the village, the path continues until you reach the mountain guesthouse Heimeli. The restaurant is located in a beautiful old Walser house and even the cozy parlor is worth a visit.
- Cathedral of St. Mary’s Assumption in Chur: Above the old town towers the Episcopal Court with the over 800 years old cathedral and its late Gothic high altar shining in golden splendor. The cathedral is dedicated to St. Mary’s Assumption and is one of the most significant cultural monuments in Switzerland. In 2020, a cathedral treasure museum opened in Chur, located very close to the cathedral. Besides the impressive cathedral treasure, the exhibition also includes the unique nationwide monumental death painting cycle from 1543, the so-called "Chur Dance of Death."
Rheinschlucht and viewpoint Il Spir: From the viewpoint Il Spir you have a beautiful 180° view over the Rhine Gorge. The Rhine Gorge (Ruinaulta) between Reichenau and Ilanz is rightly called the «Swiss Grand Canyon». It is one of the most spectacular landscapes in Graubünden.
- Church of St. Remigius and Megaliths: The approximately 500-year-old St. Remigius church was built on a magnificent viewing terrace, the Mutta. The site from the middle Bronze Age (1600-1200 BC) at Falera is the largest and most important megalithic site in Switzerland. It is under archaeological protection. The megalithic cult site is a unique center connecting astronomy, mathematics, and Bronze Age cult practices.
Over 250 km, Graubünden presents itself between Müstair and Mustér (Disentis). Valleys like the Münstertal, the dreamy Susauna valley, the rugged Schanfigg, or the diverse Cadi. Connected by four demanding passes: the Costainer, Scaletta, Strela, and Chrüzli passes.
The physical efforts are rewarded by picturesque Bündner villages amid unique valley and landscape scenery. Each valley area appears as an independent cultural space in terms of history, confessions, and law. Graubünden reflects European diversity in miniature. The Graubünden Way of St. James as a “tour d’horizon” from east to west through this impressive region.
Müstair shows medieval St. James testimonies. Tschiertschen with its St. James church is a stage location before Chur. Its cathedral displays a St. James mural by the Waltensburger master. The Cadi before Disentis also reveals traces of the old pilgrimage. Via the Urnerland, the route leads into the national Route 4 ViaJacobi.
