Description

This scenic border hike leads from Sielva in the Münstertal valley over the La Scharta pass to Piz Chavalatsch (2,763 m), the easternmost point of Switzerland. The route partly follows old border and military paths that were once used by smugglers to transport goods between the Münster Valley and the Vinschgau Valley. After the ascent to La Scharta, an impressive panorama opens up over the Ortler Group, the Münster Valley and the Vinschgau Valley. From the summit of Piz Chavalatsch, the route descends along historic military paths towards Stilfs. At the summit, a former Italian customs hut serves as a reminder of this region’s turbulent border history. The tour combines alpine scenery, cultural history and spectacular views, and is one of the most impressive cross-border hikes in the Switzerland–South Tyrol tri-border area.

Geheimtipp

Piz Chavalatsch is the easternmost point of Switzerland. The Italian border authorities were on the summit, where a dilapidated customs house still stands today.

Directions

From the Sielva Postbus stop at the Bain Guad junction, follow the road past Chasa Lemnius to the first farmstead in Guad. There, take the old path towards La Multa. After crossing the Val Plazzöl, the footpath branches off to the right immediately afterwards and leads towards Era da Jals. From there, continue uphill to La Scharta and finally to Piz Chavalatsch.

The descent to Stilfs follows the signposted trail to the Stilfser Alm and then continues down to the village of Stilfs.
