Earth over earth - insights into the history of excavation work
Description
When the first archaeological excavations began at St. Johann Monastery at the end of the 1960s, nobody could have guessed that they would shape everyday life at the monastery for decades to come.
For almost 40 years, the entire complex was repeatedly the scene of scientific discoveries, right in the middle of the lives of the Benedictine nuns.
Layer by layer, archaeologists uncovered and carefully documented the past. More than 25,000 finds came to light: evidence of a bygone era that lives on to this day in the monastery, which is still inhabited.
One person who has experienced this special combination of past and present at close quarters is archaeologist Marion Veith: she was involved in the excavations back in 1996 as a high school student, later as a student of prehistory and early history and now as a research assistant at the Pro Kloster St. Johann Foundation.
In her lecture, Marion Veith takes the audience back to this extraordinary time of excavations and provides personal insights into the fascinating world of archaeology in the monastery.
